The Dutch film The Girl with the Red Hair (1981), based on the life of Hannie Schaft, is back on the big screen. The original negative has been rediscovered and restored in 4K at the Eye Filmmuseum Amsterdam, reason enough to show it in cinemas once again. The screening is a collaboration with the Filmkoepel.
The restoration came about following a remarkable discovery. In 2025, director Ben Verbong found the original negative, long thought to be lost, in a Dutch warehouse. This material was then transferred to the Eye Filmmuseum, where it was scanned in 4K and digitally restored by STORM (Jack Kuipers), under the supervision of cinematographer Theo van de Sande.
The film tells the story of Hannie Schaft, who was held at De Vest Remand Centre, next to the Koepel in Haarlem, following her arrest. This re-release offers a new generation the chance to experience her story on the big screen.
