On September 16, 2026—Hannie Schaft’s birthday—the new animation by artist Christel Bouwmeester will be unveiled in Cell 55. The animation is part of the cell’s redesign, located near the spot where resistance fighter Hannie Schaft (1920–1945) was imprisoned during World War II. Starting with the launch, the work will be on permanent display in the cell.
Every year around this time, De Cultuurkoepel Haarlem reflects on her life and legacy, and the organization includes Hannie’s birthday in its programming. This year, too, September 16 is a fitting occasion to reflect on her story and unveil the new animation.
A New Interpretation of Hannie’s Story
Through this animation, the story of Hannie Schaft is given a new, contemporary interpretation. Artist Christel Bouwmeester is the first artist whose work is on display on the new exhibition wall in the cell. Her animation invites visitors to reflect on the story of Hannie Schaft and the significance of the place where she spent her final days.
The new design of Cell 55 transforms this historic space into a place for remembrance, reflection, and gathering. The animation plays a key role in this and adds a contemporary dimension to the story told in this space.
